About Cranial Prosthesis

A hair prosthesis (or cranial prosthesis) is a custom-made wig specifically designed for patients who have lost their hair as a result of medical conditions or treatments, such as alopecia areata, alopecia totalis, trichotillomania, chemotherapy, or any other clinical disease or treatment resulting in hair loss.

A cranial hair prosthesis is different from a regular wig. Cranial hair prosthesis is done in several steps that include the taking of the cranial perimeter mold to achieve a perfect fit. The mold is done at the base where the hair is attached. The base is made using a hypoallergenic fabric because people having chemotherapy are usually very sensitive to any material, and their scalp is prone to allergies. The same is done when applying the hair to the base. The technique used to attach the hair is focused on avoiding that the knotting touches the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

In general, a prosthesis lasts from 6 months to 2 years.

Most insurance companies will cover between 80-100% of the cost for your full cranial prosthesis and will allow you to receive one cranial prosthesis per year for medical hair loss. Depending on your insurance, your prosthesis may also be a tax deductible medical expense.

Today’s hair systems are so technologically and artistically advanced, they are virtually undetectable. Manufacturers can even use a base material similar to what is in a contact lens that is so light and breathable it looks as if hair is growing right out of your scalp.

The simple answer to that question is No. The prospect of having your hair system fall off is mortifying, but you can be assured that if it slightly lifts, it will not come off completely.

Fine mono hairpieces are made out of more durable base material and you can, therefore, wear them anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks. After the appropriate time has passed, it is essential that you remove the hairpiece and clean up both your scalp and the hair system.
